The purpose of this blog : CAPM PDUs The Complete Guide for 2024 is to provide a complete guide on CAPM PDUs for the year 2024. The blog will cover the definition of PDUs, the types of PDUs eligible for CAPM certification, how to report PDUs, and tips for earning PDUs effectively. The blog is aimed at helping aspiring project managers maintain their CAPM certification and continue their professional development.

What's new about PDUs for CAPM?

Starting from October 1st, 2020, individuals holding the CAPM® certification must earn Professional Development Units (PDUs) to keep their credentials valid.

Previously, CAPM holders were required to retake the exam every 5 years. However, many individuals working in project delivery capacities often had enough experience to pursue the PMP® certificate after 5 years, making it less likely for them to retake the CAPM exam.

However, this is no longer a requirement, as the need to retake the exam has been removed.”

Why has the Renewal Requirement Changed?

The change to PDUs demonstrates that certification holders are continuously developing their professional skills. This is a common requirement among professional organizations, not just PMI. The aim is to ensure that members holding designations maintain their knowledge at a current standard.

The switch to PDUs is a positive change, as it is easier to manage for both individuals and PMI. It also showcases that individuals are actively engaged in the project management profession. Simply taking the exam and not being involved in the field for five years no longer suffices as proof of commitment to the profession.

The PDU requirements for CAPM are minimal, as we will see shortly.

What are CAPM PDUs?

Professional Development Units (PDUs) measure continuous learning and professional development activities. PDUs help ensures that project management professionals stay current with the latest knowledge and practices in the field.

How many PDUs required for CAPM certification renewal?

To renew the CAPM certification, 15 PDUs must be earned and reported within a three-year cycle.

What type of PDUs are required for CAPM Renewal?

For renewing the CAPM certification, the following PDUs are required:

  1. A minimum of 9 Education PDUs, with at least 2 in each of the three Talent Triangle areas: Leadership, Technical and Strategic, and Business Management.
  2. A maximum of 6 Giving Back PDUs, with a maximum of 2 for professional work and 4 for volunteering and sharing knowledge.
