Every interview question is an attempt to gather information to inform this hiring decision.  Many interviewers will also specifically ask you to make your case. “Why should we hire you?” is another common interview question that can take you down the wrong road unless you’ve done some thinking ahead of time. Think of yourself as the product. Why should the customer buy?

The more detail you give for the question “Why Should We Hire you”, the better your answer will be. This is not a time to talk about what you want. Rather, it is a time to summarize your accomplishments and relate what makes you unique.  Do an inventory to determine what you have to offer as a fit for the job requirements. Think of two or three key qualities you have to offer that match those the employer is seeking. Don’t underestimate personal traits that make you unique; your energy, personality type, working style, and people skills are all very relevant to any job.

Completing an exercise around the “Why Should We Hire you” question will allow you to concentrate on your unique qualities. Like snowflakes, no two people are alike. Take some time to think about what sets you apart from others. Let the interviewer know that you have been listening to the problem and have what it takes to do the job, that you are the solution to the problem.

Remember that employers hire workers to solve a problem, whether it’s boosting sales or streamlining processes, or building a brand. Your goal when making your pitch is to show that you’re the best person to solve that problem.

The better you do that, the better your chances of landing the job.

Don’t forget to think beyond the job description and consider which of your skills and accomplishments make you a better candidate than the competition. When you’re making your pitch, remember to be positive and to portray your interest in the company and the position.

Make a list of the requirements for the position, including personality traits, skills, and qualifications. Then, make a list of the qualities you have that fit these requirements.

You want your answer to be brief – no more than a minute or two long. Begin by explaining what you believe the employer is looking for, and how you fulfill that need.

Be prepared to adapt to new information, if the interviewer indicates that another quality or skill is more valuable to the organization. It’s easy to get side-tracked and talk about why you want to work for the company, but this doesn’t answer the question.

Be sure to identify how your own skillset will benefit your potential employer in a way they may not have experienced previously. Show them that by hiring you, they are gaining someone unique and innovative.

As this is a question inviting you to promote yourself, there’s a fine line between being perceived as confident or arrogant; providing relatable evidence to back up each of your points.

All interview answers should follow a logical structure, and your response to this question should be no different. Rather than launching into a long-winded, meandering reply, keep your pitch simple, short, and memorable.

Remember to answer each interview question behaviorally, whether it is a behavioral question or not. The easiest way to do this is to use an example from your background and experience.

Asked well, this question can provide you with information about the corporate culture that will help you decide if you want the job – which is just as important as persuading the hiring manager that you’re the best person for the role.
