PMP renewal rules for US PMP holders

There are no US-specific PMI rules. You renew under the same Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program as every PMP worldwide.

What PMP renewal really costs in the US

The PMI fee is fixed. What changes your total is how you earn the 60 PDUs.

Tip

Before you pay for membership just to renew, compare the annual membership fee (check pmi.org for the current price) with the $90 you save on the renewal fee. It only pays off if you also use member webinars, discounts or PMI standards. PMI also offers a 30-day free trial membership that includes premium webinars, which you can use to earn PDUs.

How to get your employer to pay

Many US employers cover certification renewal as part of training or tuition-assistance budgets.

Section 127 educational assistance: if your employer has a written educational assistance program, it can pay up to $5,250 per calendar year for your education, tax-free to you. That is the 2026 limit; it is indexed for inflation from 2027.
Training budgets: even without a Section 127 plan, many teams have a learning budget that covers PDU courses and the PMI fee.

How to ask, in 3 steps

Check your HR or learning portal for “tuition assistance”, “educational assistance” or “certification reimbursement”.
Send your manager the cost (PMI fee plus PDU course) and how an active PMP helps your role, client contracts or bids.
Keep receipts and completion certificates. Most plans reimburse after you finish.

Is PMP renewal tax-deductible in the US?

W-2 employees: generally no. The deduction for unreimbursed employee expenses was suspended in 2018, and the suspension was made permanent in 2025. Employer reimbursement is the better route.
Self-employed and 1099 contractors: generally yes. Costs to maintain or improve skills used in your current business, such as PDU courses and the PMI renewal fee, are usually deductible as business expenses on Schedule C. Keep receipts and certificates.

PMP renewal for federal employees and government contractors

FAC-P/PM: federal program and project managers maintain FAC-P/PM with 80 continuous learning points (CLPs) every 2 years. Under an agreement between the Federal Acquisition Institute and PMI, a current PMI credential can be used as a one-time training credit toward FAC-P/PM certification or continuous learning, as authorized by your agency.
Contractors: many federal and state contracts list an active PMP for key personnel. Contracting teams may check PMI’s online certification registry, so renew before your cycle ends to avoid a gap.
