⚡ Key takeaways
- Same PMI rules in Canada: 60 PDUs every 3 years, then US$60 (member) or US$150 (non-member), about CA$85 or CA$212.
- The PMI renewal fee does not qualify for the tuition tax credit, and PDU courses only qualify if the provider is a certified institution.
- Training your employer pays for is usually a non-taxable benefit when it mainly benefits the employer.
- Self-employed PMPs can generally deduct PDU courses and the renewal fee as business expenses.
If you hold a PMP in Canada, renewing it follows the same PMI rules as everywhere else. What is different locally is what you can claim on tax, how employer-paid training works and where to find chapter PDUs. This guide covers exactly that.

Can you claim the tuition tax credit for PMP renewal?
- The PMI renewal fee: no. Exam and certification fees only qualify when the exam is needed for a status recognized under federal or provincial law. The PMP is voluntary, and the renewal fee isn’t an exam fee.
- PDU courses: only from eligible providers. Course fees qualify only when paid to a post-secondary institution or an organization certified by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and the fees to that provider must be over $100. Most online PDU providers, including overseas ones, aren’t certified.
- Canada Training Credit: it only applies to fees that already qualify for the tuition tax credit.
Important
This is general information, not tax advice. Check with a tax professional for your situation.
How to get your employer to pay
CRA generally treats training your employer pays for as non-taxable when the employer is the main beneficiary, for example courses that maintain or upgrade the skills you use in your job. Renewing a PMP you use at work usually fits.
How to ask, in 3 steps
- Check your HR or learning portal for training, certification or professional-development budgets.
- Send your manager the cost (PMI fee plus PDU course) and how an active PMP helps your role, clients or bids.
- Keep invoices and completion certificates for reimbursement.
Tip
Ask your manager to cover both the PDU bundle and the PMI renewal fee. It is usually worth more to you than any tax credit.
Self-employed and incorporated PMPs
Reasonable expenses you pay to earn business income are generally deductible. Training that maintains an existing qualification, such as PDUs to keep your PMP active, is usually treated as a current business expense. Training for a new qualification is treated differently. Keep receipts and certificates.
