What project managers are actually paid in India, from 5,749 job adverts collected on 9 October 2026.
The median tells you almost nothing. The band tells you everything.

Half of all advertised roles fall inside the shaded band — a spread of ₹1,199,936 for the same job title. If someone quotes you “the average”, they are quoting one point on this line.
Where you sit
| If you earn | You are in the | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Under ₹405,545 | bottom 25% | Below where a quarter of advertised roles even start |
| ₹405,545 – ₹811,089 | lower half | Common, but there is room above you |
| ₹811,089 – ₹1,605,481 | upper half | At or above the typical advertised role |
| Over ₹1,605,481 | top 25% | Above where three-quarters of adverts top out |
What the Indian data actually says
1. Portfolio Manager pays less than Project Manager
₹632,543 against ₹811,089, across 587 adverts.
It sounds like a step up the ladder. In advertised roles here it is paid roughly ₹178,546 below the job beneath it.
Titles that carry status do not always carry a pay band to match. Worth knowing before you take one for the name.
2. Release Manager out-earns Senior Project Manager
A Release Manager is advertised at ₹1,402,500. A Senior Project Manager, ₹877,358.
Waiting for a promotion cycle is not the only route, and here it is not the best-paid one either.
Both samples are large enough to trust: 493 and 93 adverts.
3. Pay varies more here than anywhere else we measured
The 25th percentile sits at 50% of the median and the 75th at 198%. Two people with the same job title, separated by a factor of 4.0.
This is the widest spread of any market we measured. A median here tells you very little about what you personally should be paid — the band is the only number worth quoting.

How India compares
The Indian median converts to about $8,372, placing it 15th of the sixteen markets we measured.
Converting at market rates ignores what the money actually buys locally, so treat the ranking as a rough ordering rather than a cost-of-living comparison.
What “Senior” is worth here: +8%
For comparison, the senior title adds 32% in the United States, 23% in the United Kingdom, 2% in Spain and nothing at all in South Africa. Advice to chase the senior title travels far worse than the people giving it assume.
On pay spread, the interquartile band here is 148 points wide, the widest of the sixteen markets we measured — against 13 in Spain, the tightest.
If you are underpaid
Knowing the band is the useful part. “The median is ₹811,089” is a fact. “A quarter of advertised roles start above ₹1,605,481” is an argument.
If you are below ₹405,545 and have been in post two years, the gap is probably not your performance — it is your starting point. Internal pay reviews rarely close a gap that size.
Two things that might help, both free
Benchmark your own salary — tell us your role, country and experience and see where you sit against this dataset. Contributions feed the 2027 edition, which adds practitioner-reported pay alongside advertised pay.
Work out whether the PMP pays for itself — PMI reports a certification premium, and our calculator sets that against the real cost of getting certified, for your salary rather than an average one.
Gururo is a PMI Authorized Training Partner. We sell certification training, so treat that as disclosed interest — both tools above are free and neither requires an account.
What this data is, and what it is not
It is 5,749 Indian job adverts collected on 9 October 2026, showing what employers publicly offered.
It is not what people actually earn. Advertised pay excludes bonus, pension and equity, and reflects what employers posted rather than what candidates negotiated. Senior roles filled through networks are never advertised, so they are invisible here by definition.
