What the French data actually says

1. PMO Manager pays less than Project Manager

€48,382 against €71,276, across 93 adverts.

It sounds like a step up the ladder. In advertised roles here it is paid roughly €22,894 below the job beneath it.

Titles that carry status do not always carry a pay band to match. Worth knowing before you take one for the name.

2. The programme title is worth almost nothing

Program managers are advertised at €71,761. Project managers, €71,276.

A difference of €485, from 277 adverts. People chase the programme title expecting a step up in pay. Here it is a rounding error.

It is a genuinely different job — wider scope, more stakeholders. Take it for the work if you want the work, not for the money.

How France compares

The French median converts to about $79,883, placing it 5th of the sixteen markets we measured.

Converting at market rates ignores what the money actually buys locally, so treat the ranking as a rough ordering rather than a cost-of-living comparison.

On pay spread, the interquartile band here is 42 points wide as a share of the median — against 148 in India, the widest we measured, and 13 in Spain, the tightest.

If you are underpaid

Knowing the band is the useful part. “The median is €71,276” is a fact. “A quarter of advertised roles start above €79,388” is an argument.

If you are below €49,672 and have been in post two years, the gap is probably not your performance — it is your starting point. Internal pay reviews rarely close a gap that size.

Two things that might help, both free

Benchmark your own salary — tell us your role, country and experience and see where you sit against this dataset. Contributions feed the 2027 edition, which adds practitioner-reported pay alongside advertised pay.

Work out whether the PMP pays for itself — PMI reports a certification premium, and our calculator sets that against the real cost of getting certified, for your salary rather than an average one.

Gururo is a PMI Authorized Training Partner. We sell certification training, so treat that as disclosed interest — both tools above are free and neither requires an account.

What this data is, and what it is not

It is 801 French job adverts collected on 9 October 2026, showing what employers publicly offered.

It is not what people actually earn. Advertised pay excludes bonus, pension and equity, and reflects what employers posted rather than what candidates negotiated. Senior roles filled through networks are never advertised, so they are invisible here by definition.
