When Does Your PMP® Certification Expire?

PMP certification follows a three-year renewal cycle. If you have not previously renewed, this PMP Expiry Checker estimates your certification cycle from the date you first passed the PMP exam. PMI currently requires PMP holders to earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) during each three-year cycle to maintain certification. Your PMI account remains the authoritative source for your actual certification status and renewal date.

How the PMP Expiry Checker Calculates Your Expiration Date

If you have not previously renewed your PMP certification, the first certification cycle is tied to the date you earned the credential. As a planning shortcut, this checker projects the relevant three-year cycle from the date you enter.

Example: If your first PMP certification date was January 15, 2024, a three-year planning cycle would point to January 15, 2027. This is an estimate for planning—not a replacement for the renewal date shown in your PMI account.

First PMP dateEstimated three-year cycle end
January 15, 2024January 15, 2027
March 10, 2023March 10, 2026
September 1, 2022September 1, 2025

Important: Previous renewals, suspension status, and individual PMI records can affect what applies to you. Always verify your current status and renewal date in your PMI account.

What Happens If Your PMP Certification Expires?

PMI distinguishes between active, suspended, and expired certification status.

Active

If you satisfy the CCR requirements, including earning and reporting the required PDUs and completing renewal before the cycle end date, PMI considers the certification active.

Suspended

If you do not renew your PMP within the active cycle, PMI places the certification into suspended status. PMI’s current handbook states that the suspension period lasts 12 months.

Expired

If you do not complete the renewal process during the suspension period, PMI says the certification moves to expired status.  For guidance on the next steps, please contact support@gururo.com immediately.

Important: During suspension, PMI states that you may not refer to yourself as a certification holder or use the certification designation. Check PMI’s current CCR handbook for the exact rules that apply to your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions About PMP Expiration & Renewal

When does PMP certification expire?

PMP certification follows a three-year renewal cycle. If you have not previously renewed, this checker can estimate the end of your initial cycle from the date you first passed the PMP exam. Your PMI account is the authoritative source for your individual certification status and renewal date.

PMI currently requires PMP holders to earn 60 PDUs during each three-year renewal cycle. At least 35 must be Education PDUs, and up to 25 can be Giving Back PDUs. You can claim all 60 PDUs under Education as Giving Back PDUs are optional. PMI also requires at least 8 PDUs in each area of the PMI Talent Triangle: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen.

PMI says to earn the required PDUs, enter them in the Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS), and pay the renewal fee. PMI sends information by email with a link to pay the renewal fee when it is time to renew.

If you do not renew your PMP by the end of your current cycle, PMI places the certification into suspended status for one year. During suspension, you must complete the required PDUs and renewal process. If you do not complete the renewal process during the suspension period, PMI says the certification moves to expired status and you must reapply and retake the examination to become active again.

Yes. PMI’s CCR handbook states that the suspension period lasts 12 months and that the required PDUs and renewal process can be completed during that period.

No. This is an independent Gururo tool that estimates a renewal timeline from the information you enter. PMI remains the authoritative source for your actual certification status, renewal date, and PDU progress.
